Summerstreet win star status

From the archive, first published Thursday 27th Jul 2000.

Talented Stourbridge band Summerstreet are the winners of the second round of the News Group's Star Band of the Year Competition.

The five-piece indie rock outfit will go through to the final of the contest sponsored by The Shed in Brierley Hill and Icehouse Studios in Stourbridge.

Summerstreet featuring lead guitarist Matt Beddall, bass guitarist Rob Beddall, vocalist Ricky Knight, drummer Rich Palmer and rhythm guitarist Stuart Clift, will battle it out at The Shed in December against rising Halesowen indie rock outfit Nemo and two other bands yet to be chosen.

The band, who have been together for four years, played an astonishing vibrant set at The Mitre at the end of April.

The impressive act, who revived their image shortly before the gig, are now in with a chance of grabbing two days' recording studio time at Icehouse Studio in Enville Street.

There is still time for talented borough bands to prove their star status and scoop coveted recording studio time.

Original bands can enter by playing gigs at venues across the borough, where they may be spotted by News Group entertainments reporters.

Each band reviewed or glimpsed throughout the year will be awarded points for stage presence, originality, musical ability, image and vocal talents.

One star band will be selected each quarter and the four winning acts will fight it out in a grand final at The Shed in December for two days' recording studio time at Stourbridge's Icehouse Studios.

Bands wishing to be considered must be original, live in the News Group circulation area and be spotted playing at a borough venue.

To enter, let us know dates and times of gigs by calling Bev Holder on 01384 358225.
