No Korrs for celebration

From the archive, first published Thursday 27th Jul 2000.

Shocking to the core is the only way to describe Irish tribute band The Korrs who played a double date at Stourbridge's Rock Café 2000.

The four-piece band made a half-hearted attempt to cover hits by the chart-topping Irish songstresses The Corrs.

They kicked off their disappointing set with latest hit Breathless and continued to reel off songs including So Young, I Never Loved You Anyway, Forgiven Not Forgotten, Radio and Intimacy.

The Rock Café was exceptionally dark that night, so I could barely make out what sex the black-clad singers were - let alone whether they resembled the stunning Irish pop stars.

And I never caught sight of the drummer at all; she spent the gig hiding in a black hole at the back of the gloomy stage, lit only by fleeting red and green lights.

The lead singer's voice wasn't bad and seemed to get better as the gig progressed but it didn't sound quite like the real thing.

The same can be said of the violinist/singer, but when the two attempted to sing in harmony the sound was anything but harmonious.

And the music sounded like a cheesy karaoke backing tape, as there was no bass player and it was almost impossible to hear the lead guitarist, who spent the whole gig playing to the corner.

Bizarrely, the band seemed to go down well the crowd; they were more than happy to bop along to lacklustre versions of The Corrs' haunting melodies and even began shouting for more.

Finally, for the encore, the unimaginative band regurgitated set tracks Breathless and So Young, recalling a scene from The Wedding Singer movie where Adam Sandler's singing partner keeps warbling the same track over and over again, because he doesn't know any others.
