Two brave Stourbridge bobbies who helped save a man who stabbed himself in the chest have been hailed heroes.

Police constables Mark and Steve Jenkins could be nominated for bravery awards after they restrained the 47-year-old man as he tried to commit suicide in Our Lady and All Saints Church, on Monday (November 17).

Thanks to Mark and Steve, the man, who had both his legs amputated in January, was rushed to hospital where he underwent an emergency life saving operation to remove the knife.

Sergeant Nigel Lum-by, of Dudley South community safety bureau, said: "Enq-uiries have established no other person was involved and the man had travelled down from Scotland the previous day.

"The two police officers involved were completing paperwork one minute and saving someone's life the next.

"It was a large knife, which was left in the wound to prevent further injury."

The man, who had been drinking, was discovered with a knife in his chest slumped in a pew by Father David McGough who raced to get police help.

He is now recovering in hospital.
