`Leave Europe to go it alone'

From the archive, first published Thursday 14th Apr 2005.

Nikki Sinclaire is the UKIP candidate hoping to seize the Halesowen and Rowey Regis seat from sitting MP Sylvia Heal in May's general election.

Nikki lives in Halesowen and politics are in her blood - as well as standing for election herself she acts as political adviser for West Midlands MEP Mike Mattras.

Born in London, the 36-year-old studied law at the University of Kent and Canterbury.

She is a former UK Independence Party secretary and a member of its national executive - she ran its head office from 1999 until 2001.

Nikki polled two and a half per cent of the vote when she stood as parliamentary candidate for Medway in 2001. She also stood in local elections in 2000 and 2003 where she beat the Liberal Democrat candidates.

Ms Sinclaire said she wanted Britain to leave the EU and was anti-GM crops.

She said: "EU regulations are strangling our small businesses, the lifeblood of our economy. We would replace these ridiculous laws and replace them with a framework that would allow them to be competitive against foreign competition creating more jobs locally."
