Thousands descend on waterways

THOUSANDS of boat lovers descended on Dudley's canal network last weekend to soak up the sun and enjoy fun and festivities.

Revellers travelled from across the country to Blower's Green Pumphouse, in Narrowboat Way, for the two-day gala.

The event was organised by Dudley Canal Trust and members wore authentic period costumes to entertain visitors.

Enthusiasts had the chance to check out vintage Russell Newbury engines while vintage vehicles of all types were on display.

People also took the opportunity to experience life on the water with boat trips running to and from Merry Hill.

Other activities included a display by Sandwell Model Boat Club, arts and crafts and sign writing.

June Hodgetts, general manager at Dudley Canal Trust, said there were an estimated 2,500 visitors during the weekend, about 500 up on last year.

She said: "It was great to see people here from as far away as Newbury in Berkshire and Gloucester.

"The weather was great on Saturday and even the clouds on Sunday didn't put anyone off.

"Everyone was having a great time and we are definitely going to carry this on as an annual event."

Preparations are now under way for the next major event in the trust's calendar - the ever-popular ghost tours, which begin again in October.
