Baths demo at council

From the archive, first published Friday 17th Jun 2005.

BRIERLEY Hill baths campaigners will be holding Dudley's Mayor Ian Kettle to account when they stage a mass protest on Sunday.

The demonstration will take place outside Dudley's Council House at 11am when Cllr Kettle celebrates his Mayorship.

Save Our Swimming chairman Phil Stevens said: "The Mayor is inviting everyone to join him to celebrate his Mayorship.

"This is the same man who only a few months ago showed why he should not be Dudley's first citizen when he voted first for a baths in Brierley Hill then against one despite thousands of people in Dudley showing their support for the leisure centre."

The disgruntled protester added: "We keep being told the council has no money yet they have spent thousands on the `Mayor Making' and now are spending even more on closing Dudley for this event."

Brierley Hill councillor Zafar Islam is urging people to join the protest and show their support for a new leisure centre in the area.
