Ellie is looking to the future

From the archive, first published Thursday 1st Jun 2006.

The delighted dad of Rowley Regis meningitis survivor Ellie Bishop has said she can now "look forward" after she returned home after weeks of surgery.

Brave Ellie Bishop was discharged from Birmingham Children's Hospital last Saturday (May 27) and now faces a daily workout of leg stretches to help her muscles develop.

The five-year-old has undergone major surgery to amputate parts of all four limbs since she was struck down by the brain bug in March.

This week she has been making kites at a half-term children's activity centre.

Ellie's dad, Paul Bishop, said: "It's fantastic, I'm over the moon. It's great and I'm chuffed to bits.

"It's good to be back into a normal routine. We are looking forward now. It will take a bit of getting used to and it's good to be out.

"She's coping with it and having good fun really.

She faces weekly check-ups at Birmingham Children's Hospital and will back in hospital tomorrow (Friday) for a routine visit.

Ellie will divide her time between staying with Paul and his girlfriend in Bloxwich and seeing her mum Karen Dunnaway in Rowley Regis.

Paul is hoping to move with Ellie to a council house in Rowley Regis and is now looking to spend some of the cash raised by kind-hearted News readers on a special wheelchair which would allow her to go off-road in the park and woods.

The News appeal currently stands at more than £1,800. To donate send cheques made payable to Paul Bishop to: Ellie Appeal, Halesowen News, St John's House, St John's Road, Stourbridge, DY8 1EH.
